10 Myths about Working with an Interior Designer Debunked

Myth #1  - I cannot afford an interior designer.

At DesignBar we pride ourselves on working with people from all walks of life and budgets. Working with a design professional saves you money and time by avoiding costly mistakes. We will advise you of the best way to allocate the resources you have for maximum impact, present the best products to suit your needs, and connect you with other professionals we know and trust. We also offer to-the-trade only discounts that you would not have access to otherwise.

Myth # 2  - My home or project is too small and not worthy.

No, no, no darling. You ARE worthy however small your project or humble your abode. This is YOUR life and your home is the place that should shelter and nourish you and your loved ones. It should be a place to rest and to recharge. Most of all, your home should make you happy. If your home does not make you happy, we want to help you change that.

Myth #3 -  Interior Designers only work for fancy people. I am a regular Joe or Josephine.

You needn’t be a lady who lunches or a gentleman with a yacht in every port to hire a designer. In fact, we often find projects that are for people just like yourself the most gratifying and transformative because it is YOUR home, no one else’s. So let’s make it shine.

Myth #4 - A designer will just do their own style - not mine.

The key to great design is understanding the essence of the client, their true desires for their life and home and capturing that within the space and budget. At DesignBar and as creative professionals, it would be an absolute bore to do the same thing over and over again. We want to work with and build upon your unique style, not against it.

Myth # 5 - My home will not be livable if it’s professionally “designed”.

As one of my early design crushes and former humble potter, Jonathan Adler once quipped, “Minimalism is a bummer.” Your home is not a sterilized showplace to impress others while you privately go mad. Hiring an interior designer will pull your space together like a great piece of music, harmonious and joyful. If it is not functional, too stiff or too formal or just too wacky for you and your lifestyle, that is a failure of design.

Myth # 6 - I can do it myself.

Of course you can, darling. But consider this; would you cut your own hair, tune up your car yourself or butcher a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner? Would the results be nearly as good or give you lasting enjoyment and peace of mind if you did not enlist the service of a professional in these other arenas of your life? Professional interiors designers add value. They do not diminish it.

Myth # 7 - I like my stuff and don’t want to get rid of it or buy all new.

Wonderful! We love to incorporate cherished and well-loved pieces you already own. This makes our work as designers all the more meaningful. It is in these things that you love that tell the story of who you are. We would never disregard or dispose of anything you love and want to keep. Our aim is to highlight what you love, not hide it.

Myth # 8 I’m not a trendy person. Aren’t designer’s trend setters or worse trend chasers?

Trends, styles and colors of the moment come and go. We aspire to create timeless interiors that outlast any trend or passing fancy.

Myth #9 -  Working with a professional interior designer sounds intimidating.

It can feel like a big step to seek out and begin working with an interior designer for the first time. Please remember like working with any other professional, doctor, lawyer or coach, if they make you uncomfortable, it’s not the right fit and move on.

Myth #10 - I don’t know where to start.

Start exactly where you are. Pick up the phone, or stop in and see us. We would be delighted to meet you.

Yours truly,
